Giving to the Lord is an expression of a joyful heart that seeks to honor and obey God. When we give from a glad heart that desires to please him, it honors God. While ten percent of one’s income was commanded of Old Testament Israel (Malachi 3:10) and this can serve as a benchmark for us, we ought not to think legalistically about tithing. Giving is neither a burden nor an effort to make up for something lacking in one’s relationship with God. It is certainly not something that God needs in order to accomplish His plans! Rather, giving is a part of worship as it is an opportunity to express our understanding and appreciation that everything we have has been entrusted to us by God, that we might be good stewards.
